A little over thirty years ago, Malaga was thought of as little more than the gateway to the Costa del Sol. With several European flights arriving into its airport each day, it provides visitors with easy access to the delights of the sunshine coast, however modern-day Malaga has a lot more to boast about and as the developments continue, there are lots more reasons to visit in 2019.

Over the past few decades, Malaga has developed into a cosmopolitan, vibrant and culturally rich city that still celebrates its historic past.  As you wander through the winding streets you can admire the cultural monuments, whilst enjoying the sounds of street buskers, talented artists and the irresistible aromas wafting from the artisan markets.

The rejuvenation of the city is set to continue for 2019, so read on to discover what is new in Malaga for 2019 and what further progress we can expect…

Easter in Malaga

Easter, or Semana Santa, is one of the biggest events in the Malaga calendar, but the 2019 celebrations will bring with them some changes. Many of the famous processions throughout the country will start earlier than normal, at around 2.00pm and there has also been a change to the route for 2019. Instead of parading up Calle Larios, the floats will walk down the road.

This is one of the busiest weeks in the annual calendar where Malaga becomes enveloped in cheerful music and good spirits. The processions through Malaga create a spectacle to rival any of the big Spanish cities and if you´re lucky enough to be visiting at this time, it´s definitely something you won´t want to miss.

Malaga Feria to be Extended

This 10 day event has traditionally started on the Friday, but the 2019 Feria is due to begin on Thursday 15th August. The opening speech and fireworks display are scheduled for midnight on Wednesday 14th August and the festivities will continue until Saturday 24th August.

If you´re in the area, the Malaga Feria is a must-see event, where the streets are filled with flamenco and ´fino´ (locally produced sherry), and the crowds descend on the vibrant city. Click here to find out more.

Alameda Development to be Completed

Any visitors to the city, will have noticed the disruptions that have been caused to the Alameda in Malaga. With roadworks underway, pedestrianisation being implemented and a metro line under construction, the area has looked like a building site for the past 2 years, but this is set to change in 2019. The pedestrianised area is due to be completed for April adding 23,000 square metres of space, and the metro lines completed a few months later. These costly upgrades will have a dramatic transformation on this part of the city, improving transport links and access to the area.

Marquis of Larios Statue

This emblematic statue has been under repair, but the restoration is almost complete. Once the bronze and stone has been polished, the statue is set to move locations from the Alameda Principal to the entrance of Calle Larios. This is scheduled to take place in time for the Easter parade through the city.

The Astoria Cinema Rejuvenation

The old cinema building in Plaza de la Merced is scheduled to be demolished, and replaced with something that is much more pleasing to the eye. The exact plans are currently unknown, but the regeneration will transform what is currently considered an eyesore, into a pleasing cultural hub for the city.

Hotel Skyscraper

The long road of approvals and licences continue for this project. But, despite some objections from local authorities, the central and regional governments have given their permission for its construction. The lengthy construction process has begun with completion scheduled for 2023.
